New Head Coach

The 32nd head coach for the Mississippi State Bulldogs will be introduced today. The initial event will be held at 10 a.m. in the Templeton Athletic Academic Center on campus.

Reports are that Dan Mullen, the offensive coordinator at Florida, will be the new top dawg. The 36-year-old Mullen will be leaving one of the top SEC football programs for one of the worse. He definitely has his work cut out for him.

Sylvester Croom resigned as head coach November 29th after a humiliating lost of SEC and in state rival Ole Miss.

Exams Week

It’s final exams (or affectionately known as Hell week) week at MSU. The last exams will be December 10th. Then students can start Christmas break before coming back for Spring classes that begin January 3rd.

Students will be able to sell their books back at the Barnes and Noble bookstore now through December 10th. Fall commencements will be held December 12th at 7pm at Humphrey Coliseum and December 13th at 10am.

Croom resigns

Mississippi State head football coach Sylvester Croom resigned Saturday morning after the Bulldogs lost to the Ole Miss Rebels in what was the worst lost scoring wise since 1971. The Bulldogs lost 0-45.

Croom came to Mississippi State five years ago and inherited a team that was on NCAA probation and a three year losing record. After three losing seasons, Croom led the Bulldogs to a winning season and a victory in the Autozone Liberty Bowl. This year the Bulldogs finished 4-8.

MSU athletic director Greg Byrne spoke to the media Saturday about Croom’s resignation.

Croom’s overall record at MSU was 21-38.

MSU defeats Arkansas

It might have been bone-chilling cold, but the MSU Bulldogs made it worth it to fans as they held off the Arkansas Razorbacks - 31-28. The Bulldogs improve their record to 4-7, 2-5 SEC. The win is a much needed highlight to what has become an abysmal football season.

MSU will close out their football season this Friday as they take on Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl. Kick-off is 11:30am and will be televised by Raycom Sports.

Great American Smoke Out

Tomorrow is the Great American Smoke Out. There is a free event on the MSU campus at Colvard Student Union Room 231.

There will be a display for people to learn how to quit smoking and to trade in their tobacco for prizes.

The Great American Smoke Out is a day set aside each year for those who smoke to give up tobacco for one day.

Unrelated to smoking, but there is a free event today at the Barnes and Noble bookstore where free makeup and samples will be given out. They will be given out by a Celebrity Make-Up Artist 11am-4pm today and Thursday.

Keenum named MSU’s 19th President

MSU Alumnus Dr. Mark Keenum has been chosen at the next president of Mississippi State University by a unanimous decision by the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning.

Keenum’s term will begin sometime in January 2009. Keenum received his Bachelor’s and Masters in Agricultural Economics at MSU. He joined the MSU faculty in 1984 as as a Marketing Specialist with the Mississippi Cooperative Extension Service. From 1997 - 2006, Dr. Keenum also served as an Agricultural Economics Adjunct Professor and taught an annual course on agricultural legislative policy.

Dr. Keenum will be leaving his current position as Under Secretary of Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services - a position he has held since December 2006.

MSU loses to Alabama

Really? Is anyone surprised? That’s what I thought but we had to play them since they were on the schedule and an SEC rival. But with their undefeated record, it was quite doubtful that the Bulldogs could pull off the upset of the year.

Alabama defeated MSU by a score of 32-7. MSU’s overall record is now 3-7, in the SEC 1-5. Up next for the Bulldogs is another tough SEC rival, the Arkansas Razorbacks. At least MSU will have home field advantage in that clash.

The following week MSU will close out the season by playing Ole Miss in the annual Egg Bowl. The Egg Bowl will be televised on Raycom. Coverage begins at 11:30am. The game will be played in Oxford, Mississippi.

MSU Interim President Resigns

A landscaping fiasco has caused Vance Watson to resign as interim president of MSU. Watson had applied to become the next president of the university. But in 2007, Watson had sent MSU landscaping students to do landscaping work for Higher Education Commissioner Thomas Meredith. Meredith has asked Watson for a recommendation for soil testing and landscaping. Watson did repay the state $12,000 for the landscape work done with MSU equipment, students, and supplies. Watson said that he did not want this issue to bring down MSU, so he stepped down.

Roy Ruby, former MSU vice president for student affair, has been named interim president while the search continues for a new president.

Tennessee defeats MSU

At halftime, Tennessee had a slim 3 point lead over the Bulldogs but a second half surge greatly increased the score as they went on to defeat MSu 34-3.

MSU’s overall record is 2-5, 1-3 in Southeastern Conference play. The Volunteers improved their record to 3-4, 1-3 in the SEC.

Up next for the Bulldogs is Middle Tennessee on October 25th. This is homecoming with a kickoff at 6pm. The game will be televised on ESPNU.

MSU upsets Vandy

The latest quarterback change is apparently a good move in the right direction as the Bulldogs pull off a huge victory in Starkville Saturday.

The 17-14 victory over Vanderbilt improves MSU record to 2-4, 1-2 in the SEC. The Commodores were ranked 13th in the country before Saturday’s upset. Tyson Lee showed promise in Saturday’s game as he kept drives going, moving out of the pocket to make plays happen - apparently something that was lacking before in his performance.

Up next for the Bulldogs will be the Tennessee Volunteers. The October 18th game will be played in Knoxville. Kickoff is at 6pm.
